Beauty and The Beast (2017)

The live-action remake of Disney's Beauty and the Beast is a stunning piece of historical fiction, that deserves more credit than the many comparisons to the 1991 animated feature film. The subtle comparisions between the Beast's fantastical kingdom and  Pre-Revolutionary France made throughout the film transformed the story from fairy tale into a true work of historical fiction. This is evident from the choices in costuming and Georgian era style make-up designs in the first scenes of the film that place the events of the film firmly in the early part of the 18th century. The mix of French and English spocken by the characters of the Film during Belle's first song of the Film suggest that the Beast's Kingdom is most likely in geographical area once shared, or more likely fought over, given the character Gaston's references to a war, by the French and British sorveigns.  These subtle comments in the film creates a fictional historical european kingdom, that could be considered similar to the fictional kingdom of Genovia in another Disney Film, the Princess Diaries(2001). The historical fiction of the film is further realised by the references to significant historical events such as the suble referal to the Great Plague of Marseille in 1720, which in the film, is where Belle's mother supposedly died. Another common feature of historical fiction that the film makes use of is references to easily recognisable historial figures, namely William Shakespeare. This is done through refernce to his play, Romeo and Juliet, which the Belle discusses with the Beast. Overall Beauty and the Beast was a fantastic peice of historical fiction woven around a classic fairy tail.
