How To Train Your Dragon (2010)

How to Train Your Dragon
This heartwarming film follows the journey of young viking boy, Hiccup Horrendous the Third, as he struggles to find acceptance in his village and of himself as a person. Whilst the son of the Village Leader, Hiccup does not seem to possess many qualities that his society deems desirable. His village, called Berk, values physical strength and Dragon slaying ability above all else. Hiccup is somewhat lacking in the physical strength department and while he has the brains and strategic ability to capture a dragon, as we find out at the beginning of the film, when he captures the dreaded Nightfury. His strength of character and strong ethics will not allow him to harm a creature at his mercy, which leads Hiccup to befriending and rehabilitating, the Nightfury which he named Toothless. However this same strength of character and belief that all creatures have a right to fair treatment is what eventually leads Hiccup into the act of slaying a dragon in defence of his village and Toothless, earning his villages acceptance. The moral of the film is killing is only okay if it is in the defence of others or oneself. Rather a dark theme for a children's film but it is wrapped up with lighthearted jokes and slapstick humour so I would still recommend this film for family watching.
